If you have a new puppy, you are probably anxious for it to learn at least a few basic things. Of primary concern is the time-frame in which your new dog will be able to be house trained. When considering the question of how young can dogs be trained, it is important to keep in mind that each situation is unique. Not only will the age of your puppy play an important factor, but so will its particular temperament and the difficulty of the task you are trying to teach.
Your first step with a young puppy will usually begin with paper training. This can begin at only a few weeks of age and as your puppy gets older, they should be able to let you know that they are ready to go outside and should no longer be relieving themselves indoors. Generally speaking, most breeds can complete this training process by about six weeks of age; however, patience, persistence and gentle guidance are necessary for your puppys success.
After your dog is doing well with their house training, you can begin to think about adding other small training skills to their repertoire. Until your puppy is at least several months old, your chances of any major training feats will be met with a wide variance of success. Your young puppy will typically be exuberant and ready to play, but will lack the development to execute detailed training plans. Play with your puppy, help them get exercise, fun and teach them you are in charge, but do not expect them to heel, stay or even perform tricks consistently until they are at least a few months old.
Once you begin training your new dog, be sure to use firm commands and follow through each and every time. Just like with children, your dog will learn if you mean what you say. A well trained dog is a pleasure for its owner and everyone else. Your dog wants to please you, so take advantage of that natural loyalty.
