If you own a cat or are in the process of adopting a kitten, you may want to know what are some common health problems in cats. There are two divisions of health problems for felines. First, there are common issues that occur from daily life. Second, there are diseases that cats may develop.
Common health issues that result from daily life for a cat can include hairballs, fleas, worms, poisoning and infections. Some of these, like fleas, can be treated at home. Issues that are more serious require the attention of a vet and may call for prescription medication.
Diseases your cat can develop that must be diagnosed and treated by a vet include cystitis, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, diabetes, feline immunodeficiency virus and even feline flu. It is important to bring your cat to the vet any time he or she displays odd behavior. Catching diseases early mean there is a better chance your feline friend can be treated and survive.
Some symptoms to watch for in a cat include loss of appetite, lethargy in excess of habitual sleeping patterns and dull coat. Excessively grooming or not grooming at all can both be signs of a problem. Vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or inability to use the litter box are additional signs of trouble. Changes in behavior like hiding or lurking in irregular places may also indicate a trip to the vet is warranted. Although all of these signs could indicate trouble, one or two isolated incidents of any of these may not be a cause for alarm.
It is always best to consult your vet any time you are concerned with the health of your cat. Annual or periodic checkups can also allow you peace of mind regarding the health of your animal. Your vet will be able to catch trouble before it starts with regular exams.
